I always pass by Cuyamaca Lake on my way to Julian, but this time I actually got to experience it for a whole day.
My friend, who is my boyfriend’s sister as well, was going away to college, and with the addition of multiple upcoming birthdays, the day had somewhat formed into a farewell/birthday party.
All right, so I didn’t exactly have the greatest time when we first got there. Getting pooped on by a bird wasn’t exactly my idea of a good time, especially when I reached back to feel what had landed on me.
Thank God there was a bathroom nearby.

But I can say without a doubt, that the location is absolutely beautiful. There’s even a restaurant connected to the tackle shop with a stunning view of the lake. I used to go there all the time with my dad and order hot chocolate.
Trust me, it’s worth the stop.
On the opposite side lies a hiking trail that we’ve yet to explore completely, but we enjoyed it nevertheless. With the way the sunlight was hitting the tall grasses and wildflowers, you’d think we were trapped in a John Wayne movie.
It was only until we encountered mountain lion tracks that we decided to turn back. We had no hiking equipment and fighting a mountain lion would be one western movie cliché I’d rather avoid.
For the rest of the day, I sat in a camp chair and contented myself with watching the sun go down as my boyfriend cast his fishing line out into the water. The heat had finally tapered off and everyone was either chatting amiably over melted ice-cream cake or trying to get a bite from a fish.
Overall, it was a great day to be surrounded by friends and family. There’s something intoxicating about immersing yourself in nature, bird poop and all.

Jeans would be far too restricting for exploring a lake on a hot day, so I would recommend wearing shorts instead. The area around the lake is very muddy and unless you want to plunge the bottom of your pants in it, stick with shorts.
I wasn’t planning any extraneous activity, so I dug out my sister’s old, polka-dotted halter-top. I’ve always liked this pattern due to its ability to bring to mind pin-up girls and old-fashioned milkshakes

Are there any other lakes in the San Diego area that I should be checking out? Let me know in the comments below!
