Last Sunday my boyfriend and I joined his skipper and several others for a day out sailing.
The sun was beating down on our backs as we made our way past the docks and towards the ocean. Everyone was in good spirits with the constant supply of beer, boxed wine, and goodies to snack on.
As my boyfriend manned the winch, I settled into my seat and admired the way the sun-rays bounced back against the emerald waters, sparkling like champagne.
There were so many things to see. I was ecstatic when we came across a number of sea lions in the midst of taking their afternoon nap. One wasn’t as sleepy as his comrades, however, and he fruitlessly tried to convince them to join him for a swim in mournful sounding barks.
Here’s the really cool thing about sailboats: they lean wherever the wind takes them. Sometimes it came to the point where I was duly convinced that we were going to tip over and I’d have to swim for it. Thankfully, that never happened. Although my doggie paddling skills are enough to carry me across a swimming pool, I can’t say my attempts to reach the San Diego Bay would be as successful.

For this ocean adventure, I tried to capture that summer look you can wear to a bonfire, a hike in the woods, or in this case, a day out sailing. I embellished these denim shorts a while back when I was tired of using embroidery hoops for needle practice. I wouldn’t recommend turning the shorts inside out and inspecting them-trust me, there’s a whole a web of knots back there-but they’re my favorite, all the same.
You always want to protect your hair and your scalp from the unforgiving sun when you're out on the water. Bring back memories and photos, not a sunburn. I brought along my appointed adventure hat from Patagonia as it was less likely to fly off my head. And did I mention that it's really cute?

What kind of things have you spotted on the water? Let me know in the comments below!
