When my boyfriend and I saw a link to the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off, we weren’t expecting something of this magnitude.
On the way to Ocean Beach aboard the San Diego Trolley, I didn’t see any sign of the fair, just a line of cars. In my mind, the cook-off and fair equaled a slightly bigger-than-usual farmer’s market.
When I first caught sight of it, I sat up in my seat. This wasn’t some farmers’ market; this was HUGE.

The streets of Ocean Beach, or OB, as the locals call it, were lined with booths, food vendors, bands and smaller areas for the chili cook-off and beer garden. Right as we got off the trolley we were hit by the smells of roasted corn, funnel cakes, gourmet sausages and all around deliciousness.
It was pure torture.
We walked down Artist’s Alley and checked out photography and pieces of artwork that were impossible not to drool over. My favorite was a photograph overlooking Golden Hills and Downtown San Diego. To whoever owns that robin-egg blue house, just know that I’m jealous. ;)
Next we walked up to the pier and watched surfers battle the emerald waves. I’m actually surprised that I’ve never gone up there, considering that I’ve lived in San Diego for most of my life. We didn’t walk all the way down to the edge where the Ocean Beach Pier Café was, but I made a note to check it out next time. My sister told me that they make some great clam chowder.

Not wanting to leave without something yummy, I purchased a cup of watermelon juice that I had to hold with both of my hands. It definitely met my expectations: cool, crisp, and delicious. Exactly what summer would taste like if it was captured in a cup.
It was a little nippy that day, but I decided to go without a sweater and stick to layers instead. I don’t wear leggings often, but once I spotted this grey-plaid one from Target, I couldn’t resist. Black leggings tend to stand out, especially if you’re wearing a skirt that over-emphasizes the waist, so having something subtle underneath helps.
Speaking of a skirt that over-emphasizes everything, here's how to come up with a quick solution: wear a belt. I came across this striped, stretched waist goodie at a thrift store in Hillcrest. I don't know about you, but there's something incredibly appealing about mixing second-hand and new clothing together. It's like the belt is getting a second chance at life.
And what's better than wrapping your find around an incredibly cute paperbag skirt? If you remember the season where Donna wore a plaid uniform skirt for school, then you'll know what I'm talking about.
By the way, I can't recommend That 70's Show enough. Seriously. I can't believe I jumped on the band wagon this late.
